In South Africa, restoration priorities are well articulated in national policies and strategies, but they rarely translate into actionable plans at the level where restoration actually happens – rural communities, communal land and local catchments. Community structures (water committees, farmer learning groups, traditional authorities) are largely excluded from planning, so plans are made for landscapes but not with the people living in them.

Why it is difficult:
It is difficult primarily because restoration involves multiple government departments, municipalities, landowners, communities, conservation agencies, and even funding partners, which can make coordination and accountability challenging. Although many of these stakeholders are working towards the same overall goal, they often follow different procedures and do not always collaborate effectively to achieve meaningful results.
Available spatial data does not always reflect local ecological conditions, land-use pressures, community needs, implementation costs, or the capacity required to sustain restoration over time.

The challenge
One of the biggest challenges in turning restoration priorities into action in my country is strengthening the implementation of marine and coastal ecosystem restoration through effective coordination among institutions and stakeholders.
Why it’s hard
Marine and coastal restoration often requires coordination across multiple sectors, including environment, fisheries, local governments, academia, and local communities, each with different priorities and responsibilities.
There are still important knowledge gaps, limited long-term monitoring, and insufficient technical and financial resources to scale up restoration initiatives.
